SAMHSA to Provide Conference Grants
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will be awarding 4 grants of $50,000 each by SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, and 2 grants of $50,000 each administered by SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health. These services are to help support conferences related to substance abuse (including abuse of alcohol, tobacco, prescription and illicit drugs) and mental illness prevention, early intervention, and treatment innovations and service delivery.  Applications are now being accepted. For more information visit SAMHSA.gov.

Jail Diversion and Trauma Recovery Program Application-Priority to Veterans

SAMHSA is now accepting applications to support implementation and statewide expansion of trauma-integrated jail diversion programs to reach individuals with PTSD and trauma related disorders that are involved in the justice system.  Due to the significantly higher prevalence rates among the veteran population, this program will prioritize eligibility for veterans. Total anticipated funding will be up to $2,475,000 for 6 programs. Each program is expected to be funded for 5 years at up to $412,500 per year. Program application deadline is May 8, 2008.  For more information, visit Diversion and Trauma Recovery.

Recovery Innovations is a group that provides peer support specialist training programs for individuals that have received mental health services and who wish to work as a Peer Support Specialist.  Recovery Innovations has two employment training programs available.  For more information on how to become a Peer Support Specialist and information on training opportunities visit the Recovery Innovations Recovery Opportunity website.

Wounds of War

A survey of 2,000 servicemembers found that 18.5% meet the criteria for PTSD, depression or both, 19% report to have experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and approximately 7% reported a TBI and meet the criteria for a mental health problem.  This information was provided by the RAND Corporation in their new report "Invisible Wounds of War: Psychological and Cognitive Injuries, Their Consequences, and Services to Assist Recovery.” The report outlined the results of a comprehensive study of psychological and cognitive injuries reported by servicemembers deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).  To read an overview of the RAND report click here.
